Goddess Breakfast Bowl: Cacao Oatmeal

Updated: May 29

I LOVE this bowl. It packs a punch and takes off the guilt if I do not manage to eat optimally the rest of the day because I am reminded that I started the day filled with goodness, hitting those daily healthy eating targets in ONE meal. So, what is so good about this bowl? Let me get into it....

ree

  1. Ease

It is super easy to make. Having AuDHD means I crave consistency and ease so that I can commit to something easily without stress or anxiety. However, I get bored easily, so I struggle with consistency. Stressful, right? Well, this bowl is so yummy, I never get bored. And so I can eat it every day without having to give it too much thought. Win-win. And even on those lazy days, skip the oats and the microwave and just mix it all into some yoghurt for a thick-moussey yoghurt bowl!

  2. Taste

Like I have mentioned so many times, this bowl is undeniably tasty and allows room for flexibility. Use different types of protein powders (but make sure they are not filled with crap :) ), sprinkle different toppings (roasted nuts, peanut butter, banana, coconut etc.), use different yoghurt or skip it completely. It is up to you to customise!

  3. Health

This is the biggest one. It is so god, darn healthy:

    • Flaxseeds: One serving of flaxseed (7g) provides protein, fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential vitamins and minerals. Flaxseed may help lower the risk of some cancers, maintain a moderate weight, and reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.

    • Cacao: Research has linked the flavanols in dark chocolate to improved oxygen levels, nerve function, and blood flow in the brain, thereby boosting brain function. Cacao can boost your mood. It contains magnesium, which has been linked to reduced anxiety, depression and stress. Cacao also naturally increases serotonin.

    • Berries: It has been investigated that the antioxidants in berries stop the propagation and proliferation of cancer cells. Berries also support a healthy heart by improving blood pressure and cholesterol levels and reducing inflammation, and a healthy brain by improving memory and cognitive function.

    • Milk: As long as you are not lactose-intolerant, milk is a great way to get your daily intake of calcium and protein, helping bone and teeth health.

    • Greek yoghurt: I love Greek Yoghurt for its gut-healing properties. I struggle with a sensitive gut (another unfortunate symptom of ADHD), and so I must look after my microbiome. Greek yoghurt is an easy way to get those probiotics into your diet. Don't like the taste of it? No worries, the sweetness of the protein powder balances the sourness of the yoghurt, and together it is yummy!

    • Protein-powder: I am advocating for Soul Food's Protein Powder. The benefits of using theirs are that it boasts Pea Protein, which is kind to sensitive guts. It has also been infused with White Hemp Protein for an effective amino acid profile for the highest quality of plant-based protein. It is also enriched with Peruvian Maca, the entire B Vitamin Complex for hair, skin, and nails; high levels of Iron, Magnesium, Calcium, and L-Carnitine for energy and bone density, and Flaxseed for Omega-3.

And that isn't even all of the benefits! So hopefully now you can see why I love this breakfast. On with the recipe!

Chocolate high-protein porridge filled with goodness

Goddess Breakfast Bowl: Cacao Oatmeal

Serves: 1

Ingredients
  • 25g Protein Powder*

  • 25g Oat bran

  • 2 tsp flaxseeds

  • 2 tsp raw cacao powder

  • 200-250 ml whole milk (you can substitute with plant milk, but please ensure it is not filled with additives!)

  • 120g FAGE Greek yoghurt

  • 2 tsp bee bollen

  • 2 tsp cacao nibs

  • 2 tsp freeze-dried raspberries (or fresh berries!)

Method

  1. Combine 200ml milk, oat bran, protein powder, flaxseeds and cacao in a bowl and stir to try and remove any lumps.

  2. Microwave for 2 minutes, stirring halfway through. After 2 minutes, if the texture of your oatmeal is too thick, add more milk, stir, and cook for another 30 minutes.

  3. Dollop the Greek yoghurt on top, and sprinkle with your bee pollen, cacao nibs and berries. If you are feeling extra fancy, sprinkle a bit of sea salt on top.

    Enjoy!

Note -

*I highly recommend Soul Food's Protein Powder. My friend introduced me to this after I had finished ranting about how protein powder is filled with crap to taste good. This is filed with goodness, uses a natural and non-harmful sweetener and is DELICIOUS - especially in this recipe :) A huge thank you to Hollie for this recipe!
