Stockholm Uncovered: Your guide to exploring Sweden's vibrant Capital

Are you ready to embark on an adventure in one of Europe's most vibrant and picturesque cities? Well, buckle up because we're heading to Stockholm, the jewel of Scandinavia! As your bubbly guide, I'm here to sprinkle a little extra magic on your journey through this stunning city.

My mum recently moved to Stockholm, which has got me coming back to the city more and more. And as I instinctively do, explore, discover, and share!

Stockholm isn't just a place; it's an experience. With its charming cobblestone streets, colourful buildings, and crystal-clear waterways, this city is a dream come true for any explorer. So, let's take a dive into the magical city of Stockholm.

  1. Gamla Stan (Old Town)

Let's start our adventure in the heart of Stockholm – Gamla Stan. This medieval treasure trove is bursting with history, culture, and Instagram-worthy photo ops. Get lost in the labyrinth of narrow alleys, admire the majestic Royal Palace, and don't forget to snap a selfie by the iconic Stortorget square. So, this begs the question: where are the best places to visit in Gamla Stan? I will warn you, it is a bit of a tourist trap, but if you do not mind this and want to immerse yourself in the culture, then this should be your first stop.

  1. Vasa Museum: Ready to set sail on a voyage through time? Head over to the Vasa Museum, where you'll discover the remarkably well-preserved Vasa warship. This 17th-century vessel, salvaged from the depths of the sea, offers a fascinating glimpse into Sweden's maritime history. Plus, the museum's interactive exhibits will keep you entertained for hours!

  1. Skansen Open-Air Museum: Calling all nature lovers and history buffs! Skansen is the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and cultural immersion. Wander through this sprawling open-air museum to experience traditional Swedish life, complete with historic buildings, Nordic wildlife, and captivating folk performances. Don't miss the chance to cuddle up with adorable farm animals – it's guaranteed to make your heart melt!

  1. Djurgården Island: Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and retreat to Djurgården Island, Stockholm's green oasis. Whether you're picnicking in the lush parks, cycling along scenic trails, or indulging in a leisurely boat ride, this idyllic paradise offers endless opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation.

  1. Fotografiska: Are you passionate about art and photography? Then Fotografiska is your haven! This contemporary museum showcases cutting-edge exhibitions by both renowned and emerging photographers from around the world. Lose yourself in thought-provoking imagery, and don't forget to recharge with a cup of coffee at the museum's stylish café – the perfect spot for some introspection and creative inspiration.

  1. Södermalm: Let's spice things up with a visit to Södermalm, Stockholm's hipster haven. This trendy district is brimming with eclectic boutiques, vintage shops, and cozy cafés. Explore the colourful streets, hunt for unique treasures, and treat yourself to a fika (Swedish coffee break) with a side of people-watching – because in Södermalm, every moment is a celebration of individuality!

Stockholm City

  1. K25: It isn't easy to find value places in Sweden (compared to what you can get in the UK at least), with a glass of wine costing a minimum £13 and coffees costing up to £5/6. However, at K25, you will find a food hall exhibiting a range of delicious food from various cuisines. And here is the best part - you will not spend more than £13 on a large portion of food (enough for dinner). This is a hidden gem and worth a visit. I highly recommend any of the food from Hattori Sushi Devil.

2. Pings Sakura Hot Pot: Another favourite, Hot Pot. Again, at very affordable pricing and a very decent quality of food and cooking, any Asian food lovers should try this place out.

Outside Stockholm Centre

  1. Djurönäset: This wonderful gem is located under 2 hours east of Stockholm via public transport. This sounds like a lot but public transport is straightforward, cheap and enjoyable. The journey also involves thick meadows and forests and over glittering seas. Trust me, the journey will go by in a flash. Once you arrive, you will walk on a woodland path beside the road leading into the forest. The density of trees will soon thin out to present a clearing, with Djurönäset situated in the centre. This Spa is scattered across the island, with the private beach and beach-front jacuzzis and sauna on one side, and the indoor and outdoor pool and gym on the other. We went on a Tuesday, so pretty much had the place to ourselves - it was truly magical. Per person, it came to £34 for 3 hours.

Here is the outside of the spa:

If you keep walking to the right, you will come to a cliff edge with deep blue seas below and a woodland to your left. You can go wandering on a woodland trail with trees to your left, and cliffs and sea to your right. We actually did this in our bathrobes and slippers!

This is the indoor pool:
